New Year, New Passwords!
With the start of a new year, now is a great time to consider an annual refresh of your passwords. Just recently it was discovered that 2 million passwords were stolen, compromising accounts including Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, Yahoo and others.
Recommendations when choosing a new password:
- Don’t use the same password for more than one website or account. If security is breached at one, your email address and password could then be used to access your accounts elsewhere.
- Choose a strong password with a mixture of upper case characters, lower case characters, numbers and punctuation. The longer and more complex, the better!
Here’s a checklist of the most common passwords you should update, with quick links to the “change password” sections.
- Google / Gmail
- Hotmail / Outlook.com
- Apple iCloud
- Online Banking
After you’ve set a new password, you will need to re-sign in to your devices with the new passwords. e.g. Apple iCloud – you will get a prompt on your iPhone / iPad asking you to enter the new password for your Apple account, and for your email account(s). If you have a Kindle, you’ll need to update it with your new Amazon password.
