Windows XP End of Support

Windows XP End of Support – how will it affect your business?

You may have read that support for Windows XP ends soon. This is an important change in the IT world that will affect your business if you have any computers still using Windows XP.

What is Windows XP end of support?

On April 8th 2014, Microsoft will officially end support for Windows XP and Office 2003, legacy products that are more than a decade old. End of support for Windows XP means that there will be no new security updates, fixes or technical support available from Microsoft; which will result in security risks in addition to future incompatibility issues with other applications and hardware that you use.

What does this mean?

Whilst you will still be able to run Windows XP in your environment, using it after April 8th 2014 may expose you to potential risks, such as:

  • Security – Security updates patch vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malware and help keep users and their data safer. Without critical Windows XP security updates, your PC may become vulnerable to harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software which can steal or damage your business data and information. Anti-virus software will also not be able to fully protect you once Windows XP itself is unsupported. It is important that you migrate to a current supported operating system – such as Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 – so you can receive regular security updates to protect their computer from malicious attacks.
  • Lack of Software Support – Many software vendors will no longer support their products running on Windows XP as they are unable to receive Windows XP updates. For example, the new Microsoft Office takes advantage of the modern Windows and will not run on Windows XP.
