This week saw the return of the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce’s annual Business Expo, set within the stunning grounds of Ryde School, and once again, Wight Computers was there to make an impact!
Our theme this year? “Don’t DIY your IT, hire an expert.”
We’ve seen it all over the years, from dodgy repairs involving hot glue and hope, to businesses unintentionally leaving the door wide open to cyber-attacks. The truth is that most business owners don’t have the time or expertise to handle IT properly. They should be focusing on what they do best and leaving the tech to trusted professionals. Like us.
To help get that message across, we turned up in full hi-vis and hard hats, ready to “rescue” visitors from IT disasters. At our stand, we ran an interactive game: we presented people with real-world IT disaster scenarios and invited them to rummage through our toolbox to find the tool they need to fix, or better yet, prevent, the problem.
If they didn’t know the answer, they could bail out and grab the emergency phone marked “Call Wight Computers” or reach for the Mermaid gin instead!
We also asked people to confess their biggest DIY disasters, IT related or not, and the responses were brilliant. From drilling through hidden water pipes to flat-pack nightmares, our board was soon full of eye-wateringly good stories.
And yes, the biscuits made a comeback! This year’s showstopper treats were shaped like hammers and spanners, beautifully made by The Cakesmith and very well received.
🎉 Congratulations to Kate Howard from Glanvilles Damant, who won the prize draw taking home the toolbox and its contents – we hope it comes in handy (but not for IT)!
We also awarded a bottle of Mermaid gin to our favourite DIY confession of the day.
🥇 Well done to Matt Greg from NOSY, whose confession truly deserved the prize – everyone kept pointing it out throughout the day as the saddest tale of woe!
